Hello Again

Today it is a month till Christmas and months since I last posted. Sorry! D: I don’t really have a very good excuse. I suppose school has played a part… but also just plain laziness and bad time management; often I could have blogged but just didn’t.

Rest assured no major tragedies have occurred. All my family members are in working order and school, while being school, is not too strenuous.

Since I last blogged:

  • School started and there was the usual shake-up of forms and teachers. While I was separated from some of my friends, I think I got a pretty good bunch this year.
  • Doctor Who started and ended. (Missy is so fine.)
  • I got a Twitter account. I’m pretty sure that, so far, all of my followers are either a) friends or b) people who ‘follow for a follow’, but I’ll just say they genuinely like my tweets. :P
  • I got Spotify… And may have gotten every so slightly addicted. More on this later! Or not. We’ll see. :P
  • Oh, I also did my Grade 4 Piano exam in that scary church I mentioned back when talking about my Grade 1 exam. But the examiner was really nice, so it was actually OK (although my sightreading wasn’t great).

This post is painfully short to me, but I’m just gonna go ahead and publish it because I’m tired (I swear at least 50% of my posts have been published after 22:30, and I’m not sure it’s healthy). I think the important thing is to keep posting. :)

What’s in a name?

LOTS OF THINGS.

You might not think I come into trouble with a name like Joseph. In fact, as an Indian, people only get surprised because they expect me to have a more complicated name. Once I was in quiz match, and the quizmaster asked for my name. When I told him, he looked a little bemused, and then told everyone a funny story about how some other kid a while back had replied, “Call me Abs.”

Most of my moans come from whether or not to use Joe or Joseph. It’s not really a matter of which I prefer – I don’t even realise the difference when people talk to me and I only realised my sisters called me Joe after a decade or so. :P It’s more the first impression it gives.

Each name has its setbacks and advantages. Joe is more casual, easier to pronounce and less conspicuous, but I’ve always thought Joseph sounds classier. Besides, Joe (believe it or not) is more confusing to spell. In Yr 1, I made the mistake of asking my teacher to call me Joe. Every single time she was marking my work, it was written Jo, a girl’s name. This annoyed me greatly and I tried not to make the same mistake again.

In Yr 3, there was already someone called Joseph – so rather than mess about with initials, I was called Joseph and he was called Joe. I preferred it at the time, but in hindsight “Joe” got the better deal.

Then it came to secondary school. I thought I could reinvent myself, so I became Joe. I think it’s worked pretty well, but now after I’ve gotten to know everyone it doesn’t really make much difference. Joe, Joseph… it’s all the same to me really.

My main annoyance is when people don’t use Joe or Joseph but something entirely novel that I have not authorised. This one time I was at karate and a girl kept calling me Josh and then everyone starting calling me Josh. Luckily I protested and people have started calling me Joe or Joseph again.

I have had various other nicknames, but these have never been as wide spread. In school one of my friends used to call me Ioseph and Jsph (these are actually some real nicknames). Another calls me average Joe (or when I do something good, above-average Joe). Once a teacher (yes the same one from Year 1) called me ‘the baby of the class’ due to my summer holiday birthday.

On the internet I haven’t had many names, but I suppose technophile9 and techno-Joe count.

However most of my nicknames come from my family. Jojo, Mojo Jojo, Bro, Mini-Boy-[sister’s name] and Josephine are all the handiwork of my sisters. My parents used to call me a monkey, but not as much nowadays.

However most of these are ‘extinct’ nicknames, save Joe, technophile9 and more recently bro. I guess I’ve never been much of a nickname person.

What about you? Do you like nicknames? Undoubtedly I have missed some, but I think I’ve listed most of them.

Joe.

Note: Joseph means ‘God will increase’, which I like. :)

January in a nutshell

The last time I was here it was December 30  (I know it says December 31, but when I published the post it was past 11:00 and WordPress hasn’t adjusted to the end of Daylight Saving Time… I am waiting eagerly for March 30).

As it stands, we have a lot to catch up on, so this will be one of my long posts. I know that some of you don’t have time to waste on reading a 75000 word post, so I have devised a little system where anything in black font is necessary reading – everything else is optional. So this is optional.

I have a lot to get off my chest… Part 2!

It’s been a while since I last posted so a lot has happened. I don’t really have any reasons for not posting, it just never felt like the right time. Obviously homework, but I think if I had wanted to I could have posted.

To catch you up quickly…

… on why there is a skull in this picture?

Almost immediately after my last post, we had a French exchange student come live in our house for a week. I won’t say much about it, but she was really nice, and it was a good week.

School is also going well. The homework levels have settled a bit lower than usual, which is a good thing, and the feeling of novelty is nearly gone. I am officially back to school. Quiz Club is thriving. Although in the beginning my friends found it boring, a lot of them have returned and I’m very happy about that. That might sound a little weird, as it isn’t even my club, but last year, I was the only one in my entire year in Quiz Club for most of the year, so this is good news! We have had a few minor tests, but nothing too drastic yet. Next half-term is when the Christmas exams start, so eventually my feeling of security will be shattered and all sense of calm will be gone… to put it lightly.

Moving on…

My parents recently signed the letter for me to go on a trip to Paris with the school for a number of days. This might not sound that big, but I’ve never been abroad without my family before, so I’m really excited! :D For part of the trip, we’ll visit Disneyland Paris, so it’ll be my second time going. I have fond memories of their, although I admit Florida would have been better… but by no means am I complaining! ;)

I also went to a Chinese restaurant yesterday with the rest of the family. Although I would like to say that I tried everything and was not that much of a fussy eater (especially as I know that everyone loves Chinese food) it wasn’t really for me. There was nuggets and chips and jelly available, and that composed the majority of my meal. I think the only vaguely Chinese thing I liked was the ‘Chef’s Special’; I didn’t even like the noodles there!

And finally, some very good news…

I am really happy to say that I now have 50 followers. Fifty! This is also my sixtieth post, but considering that includes all the little updates and stuff, that’s not really that important. I would like to thank everyone who followed, even the spammers. ;) Thank you for making this blog worthwhile. I have also been nominated for the WordPress Family Award by The Indecisive Eejit (formerly the Geeky G4mer) so I will get on that right away!

Again, thank you guys so much. I wasn’t really sure where this blog would go when I started, but I’m happy where it’s taking me. I’ve met a lot of really good people here, so thanks for supporting me!

Joe.

OT: Why school, why?

As you may have noticed, I have been very quiet since my last post of the summer holidays. Almost too quiet… I felt as if some force was holding me back. What? It was the awards? They had come alive and attacked me? Nah, nothing that drastic.

*In the background, an award twitches*

No, the force holding me back was school. And homework. I can’t say that I was full up to my head with work all the time, but there was an awful lot of homework. I even missed three OT posts in a row!

Sorry guys. But after that brief announcement… Continue reading

Sports Day (and Toothpaste revealed)!

Why wasn’t this on the Coming Soon section? Why have you had no warning?

I don’t know. To be honest, I completely forgot Sports Day was happening until Friday. ;)

Background information (skip this if you want to, or if you’re from my school)

My school has four houses (like Hogwarts). For now, let’s call them Draco, Snape, Harry, and Potter. These compete in the House Cup (again, like Hogwarts). I myself am in Potter. Every now and then we attempt to match each house with it’s Harry Potter equivalent, and Potter is often compared to Slytherin because of its competitiveness. -_- I mean, no offence to Slytherin, but I consider Potter as more of a Ravenclaw house. But of course this changes from year to year.

But I’m getting ahead of myself…

Where do I start?

I have a lot to get off my chest.

I have just broken free from the endless monotony of exams and revision.

It blinded me. It scarred me. It scared me…

LOL, JK. (I hope Aliyaaaa from Three Magical doesn’t mind my use of her work. :3) But it was still pretty scary. I guess you want a run-by-run of how my exams went. If I was really stressed about them, I would hate having to relive it again, but to be honest, most of them went OK. o_O Does that make me sound like a bad person, by saying my exams were bearable, that I didn’t cry myself to sleep every night?

If you’re looking for a sob story, you’re not going to find it here. But you may still want some hankies… You know. Just in case. *Sniffles*.  Ok, here goes…
